Southerly is designed with privacy in mind. There is no account to create, and the app has no servers of its own. Its developer does not collect, receive, or share personal information.
Southerly does not collect personal information, account information, analytics data, advertising identifiers, usage tracking data, or any other information that can be used to identify you.
Location access is optional. Southerly works with any places you choose, anywhere in the world, and you can add them by searching.
If you grant location access, Southerly uses it in two ways. When you add Current Location, the app takes a single reading and saves it as one of your places. It is not updated as you move. When Navigation is on, the app reads your heading, altitude, and speed while it is open, to display them. These readings are not saved or sent anywhere.
Your list of places is stored only on your device. Southerly does not track your location.
Weather information displayed within Southerly is provided by Apple Weather. To fetch a forecast, the app sends the coordinates of the place you are viewing to Apple's weather service. Place search and place names use Apple Maps.
Any information processed by Apple is governed by Apple's own privacy policies and terms.
To show official weather warnings outside the United States, Southerly asks the IFRC Alert Hub for the warnings in the country of the place you are viewing. Only the country is sent.
To show recent earthquakes near a place, Southerly sends that place's coordinates to a public earthquake catalogue: GeoNet (Earth Sciences New Zealand) for places in New Zealand, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre elsewhere.
To draw a pressure chart, Southerly asks Environment and Climate Change Canada's MSC GeoMet service for sea-level pressure over a map area around the place you are viewing.
To draw the rain radar, Southerly asks RainViewer for radar images centred on that place. Its coordinates are rounded to about a kilometre.
These requests, and the warning and earthquake requests above, concern the places in your list, which can be anywhere in the world. No account, name, or device identifier is sent with them. A place added with Current Location is sent in the same way as any other.
The Apple Watch app receives your places and their forecasts from your iPhone over Apple's WatchConnectivity link. It makes no network requests of its own and does not use location services.
Southerly does not sell, share, rent, or disclose user information to any third parties. Because the app does not collect user information, there is no personal data to share.
Southerly uses Apple Weather for forecasts, Apple Maps for place search and names, the IFRC Alert Hub for weather warnings outside the United States, GeoNet and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre for earthquake reports, MSC GeoMet for pressure charts, and RainViewer for rain radar. The app does not use third-party analytics, advertising networks, tracking services, or marketing platforms.
